LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Two thoughts struck tight end Martellus Bennett almost as soon as he met new Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman. One was this. Trestmans a genius. The other? "Hes a lot like me," Bennett said, laughing. "I was like, I like this guy. Hes a lot like me. Hes a genius, Im a genius. Theres two geniuses in one room. Hey, lets go with it." All joking aside, this is a big week for Trestman. He makes his debut as an NFL coach when the Chicago Bears host the Cincinnati Bengals, and to say hes come a long way is no exaggeration. After years as an assistant in the league and on the college level before heading to the CFL, Trestman finally has his opportunity. Just dont expect him to get all sentimental when he walks into Soldier Field on Sunday. "I would think its going to be all business," Trestman said. "I just cant see it being bigger than that -- focus on the football team and my job during the course of the game. Im certainly very appreciative going out there being the head coach of the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Theres no doubt about it. But my focus is to continue to prepare this week and go out and do my job on Sunday." The Bears hired Trestman to replace the fired Lovie Smith, hoping he could spark their offence and get the most out of quarterback Jay Cutler. Now, theyll see how it all comes together. Theyll also be tested right from the start against a team that made the playoffs and boasts one of the top defences in the league, with Geno Atkins poised to wreak all kinds of havoc for the Bengals. Trestman spent the past five seasons as the head coach of the CFLs Montreal Alouettes, winning back-to-back championships, but it remains to be seen if that success will translate to Chicago. "When he talks to you, he understands how everythings interconnected between not only us but things that happen in our lives," said Bennett, beginning his first season in Chicago. "Everybodys connected and everyones part of everyones family." On the field, the Bears success hinges largely on a rebuilt offensive line and Trestmans ability to get through to Cutler, something past co-ordinators Ron Turner, Mike Martz and Mike Tice were unable to do. Either way, the spotlight is on the head coach. He has a strong history working with quarterbacks, including Bernie Kosar, Steve Young and Rich Gannon. Cutler, meanwhile, has something to prove. He also has an expiring contract, and the perception in Chicago is hes out of excuses. After all, the Bears have four new starters on the offensive line, including newcomer Jermon Bushrod at left tackle. They have an elite receiver in Brandon Marshall, a versatile running back in Matt Forte and a pass-catching tight end in Bennett. Mostly, he has an offensive-minded head coach. Theyre running the West Coast offence, which should get the ball out of the quarterbacks hands and cut back on the number of hits he absorbs. On the surface, it appears he has everything he needs. "Anyone who has really worked with him says kind of the same thing; hes going to do everything he can to protect the quarterback and hes going to try to make our job as easy as possible, which I think has rang true so far," Cutler said. Much has been made of his relationship with Trestman, but its not just about the quarterback. Everyone, it seems, is curious. Players like what they see so far from Trestman, but what happens when the games start to count? How will he handle the pressure? "I know Im very curious to see how once the season starts how he reacts when the pressure gets going and the bullets start flying," cornerback Tim Jennings said. "Everythings starting to be real. So Im real curious to see how he can manage the offence and manage the whole team as well. We all bought into the system. We believe in him, and so were just excited to get this thing going." Notes: Former star linebacker Brian Urlacher caused a bit of a stir by saying faking injuries was part of the Bears game plan. Now an analyst for Fox Sports 1, Chicago had a "designated dive guy" to slow fast-paced offences. If that was the case, Bennett said, the Bears werent the only ones. "Every team does that," he said. "Its just like when youre boxing, you get hit too many times you want to hold him up against the ropes. I think a lot of teams do that. Youve got to do whatever it takes to win the game." ... Trestman said D.J. Williams "moved well" in practice on Wednesday," but he still hasnt decided who will start at middle linebacker this week. Trestman left open the possibility that Williams and Jonathan Bostic could both see time there against the Bengals. ... The Bears had no players on their injury report on Wednesday. Robert Griffin III replaced an injured Colt McCoy after one possession and gave the Redskins a brief spark, putting together a pair of scoring drives that gave Washington a 13-10 edge late in the third quarter. Beckham then hauled in two touchdowns from Manning in yet another dazzling display for the rookie receiver, who finished with 12 receptions totaling 143 yards. Nine of those grabs came in the second half, enabling New York (5-9) to deal the reeling Redskins (3-11) a sixth straight loss. Nothing this guy does amazes me at this point, Giants safety Antrel Rolle said of Beckham. Hes a phenomenal talent and more importantly, I think he has the attitude and passion that this game deserves and that this team needs. He tries to go out there and be the best of the best each and every time on the field. Griffin completed 18-of-27 attempts for 236 yards and a touchdown in place of McCoy, who aggravated a previous neck strain on Washingtons opening series. The embattled quarterback also had a rushing touchdown overturned late in the first half, with a replay review determining that he fumbled prior to crossing the goal line. Weve had a lot of turmoil, lot of things going on, but at the end of the day, youve gotta get out there, suit up, and when your number is called be ready to play, Griffin said. Manning ended with 250 yards on 23-of-34 passing in the Giants second consecutive win following a seven-game losing skid. Mostly quiet with the Giants offense stagnant for the majority of the first three quarters, Beckham broke out with his team down by three late in third. He drew a pass interference call on Bashaud Breeland to put New York into enemy territory, then snared a Manning pass on a crossing route two plays later before outsprinting the defense for a 35-yard touchdown to give the Giants a 17-13 lead. Eli made a check to the tight end and gave me the post route to try and occupy the safety, said Beckham of the play. The slant came open late and it just looked like a lot of open field, so I tried to run as fast as I could. Griffin wasnt able to bring the Redskins back, as Washingtons next three drives resulted in three-and-outs while Beckham continued to rack up catches and yards. The first-round pick had five receptions totaling 56 yards on a back-breaking 12-play trek that began early in the fourth quarter. Beckham finished the sequence off with a diving 6-yard grab that put New York up 24-13 with under five minutes to go. Beckham had another touchdown catch called back by a holding penalty on the Giants previous possession, which ended when the rookie was stopped for no gain on 4th-and-1 from the Washingtonn 28.dddddddddddd Griffin took over with the Redskins trailing 7-3 late in the first quarter and was razor-sharp on his second drive of the day. The 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of Year completed all five of his throws on a 7-play, 77-yard march he capped by finding a wide-open Chris Thompson in the flat for a 9-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. After leading Washington down the field again near the end of the first half, Griffin appeared to have sent the Redskins further in front by tumbling into the end zone on an 8-yard scramble as time expired. The score was overturned, however, when replay determined that Griffin didnt reestablish possession after being temporarily dislodged of the ball by Jason Pierre-Paul just before he crossed the goal line. Its a touchdown in every game Ive ever seen, Griffin quipped afterward. The controversial ruling prompted an ejection for the Redskins Santana Moss after the veteran receiver made contact with an official as he argued the call. Moss was also given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, allowing the Giants to place the second-half kickoff at the Washington 35. New York took advantage of the short field, as Chandler Fenner recovered Josh Browns onside kick at the Redskins 17 to set up Browns 32-yard field goal that tied the game at 10-10. Griffin helped sent Washington back in front later in the third quarter with a third-down strike that Andre Roberts took for a 61-yard gain deep into New York territory. However, Pierre-Pauls sack of Griffin in the red zone forced the Redskins to settle for Kai Forbaths 38-yard field goal. McCoy was effective on his lone series of the day, moving the Redskins from their own 4-yard line to the Giants 17 to position Forbath for a 35-yard field goal with 6:47 left in the opening quarter. He went 4-for-7 for 39 yards on the drive while adding 24 yards on a pair of rushes. The Giants answered with a 12-play, 56-yard jaunt after getting excellent field position when Preston Parker took the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to near midfield. On 3rd-and-8 from the Washington 10, Manning lofted a pass into the end zone that Beckham came down with in tight coverage to give New York a 7-3 edge. Game Notes Beckham recorded his seventh consecutive game with 90 or more receiving yards and set a Giants season record in that category for a rookie with 972, breaking Jeremy Shockeys mark of 894 in 2002 ... Griffin was sacked six times, the sixth straight game in which the Redskins have allowed five or more. Thats the second-longest streak in the NFL since 1964 ... In addition to McCoys injury, offensive tackle Trent Williams exited for Washington in the second half with a left shoulder strain ... Manning has thrown for seven touchdowns in New Yorks two wins over the Redskins this season ... Thompson was elevated from Washingtons practice squad on Thursday.
